I don’t think I disagree with the spirit of your points. Having the initiative to seek out studies in things you *actually* care about (within reason; good luck finding a job if you’re only interested in marshmallows) is really important. And to that end, I feel that mandatory schooling often starts to inhibit this sort of self-driven process to learn.
